Ice fishing can be a tedious activity without the use of specialized equipments.  It truly is impossible to just go the frozen lakes and stand on the ice without the appropriate gears and paraphernalia.  Remember, this is not just plain fishing, but rather ice fishing --- meaning you are facing different conditions and circumstances, so you should prepare for it.

One of the most important equipment that you must take with you is the ice fishing augers.  It’s because this is the first thing needed in order to start your ice fishing activity.  You use these ice fishing augers to drill the thick ice.  Without these ice fishing augers, drilling a hole through the ice would surely be a difficult task.  Ice fishing augers come in two types: gas-powered ice fishing augers and hand-operated ice fishing augers.  Both have advantages and disadvantages, so when you buy one, just make sure that it is appropriate to your ice fishing activity --- how often you use it, how hard the ice is in your frozen lake, etc. 

If you are one of those people who go ice fishing occasionally, or those who go ice fishing when friends invite them to, or those who just go ice fishing when they feel like it, or those who prefer light ice fishing, then it would be better to have the hand-operated or hand-powered ice fishing augers.  Simply because, these hand augers are less expensive yet it can drill a good job of boring a hole through the ice.  But if you spend much time ice fishing or staying on the ice or frozen lakes, then it would be better to have the gas-powered ice fishing augers, these are good for heavy-duty drilling --- can cut through the ice easily, allowing you more time to fish and giving you a wider area to fish, however, these gas-powered ice fishing augers are more expensive compared to the hand augers.

These ice fishing augers are usually durable if properly taken care of.  Also, the engines of these powered ice fishing augers come in different horsepower, which will help you bore holes in different depths of the ice.  The thicker the ice layers, the higher the horsepower you need, so before you buy one, just check the ice thickness of your area or frozen lake to know which auger you need.

So, the next time you go ice fishing, make sure you have your powered ice fishing augers with you, check it first if all parts are functioning well, and then hit the ice.
